The CMIE Healthcare Innovation Bootcamp on Oncology, held from January 31st Jan to February 3rd, 2024, was a transformative event jointly organized by the Centre for Medical Innovation and Entrepreneurship (CMIE) and the National Cancer Institute, AIIMS New Delhi. This collaborative initiative brought together thirteen startups and aspiring entrepreneurs, creating a diverse pool of ideas and expertise. The boot camp aimed to stimulate indigenous innovations in cancer care through a carefully curated format that included technical sessions, case studies, clinical visits, and expert interactions.

Participants engaged in a series of technical sessions that covered a wide range of topics, including the basics of cancer, cancer screening and epidemiology, surgical oncology, radiation oncology, and regulatory pathways and compliances. These sessions, led by experts, provided a comprehensive understanding of the technological landscape in oncology and the scope for new product development in the field.

The boot camp also featured case studies that presented real-world challenges and innovative solutions, showcasing the complexity of healthcare challenges and successful innovations at AIIMS. Clinical visits to hospital settings and discussions with experts further enhanced participants’ understanding of the clinical applications discussed during the boot camp, bridging the gap between theory and practical application.

A special camp visit on preventive oncology addressed cancer screening and epidemiology, creating a holistic understanding of cancer care. This unique interaction among patients, clinicians, and participants highlighted the importance of early detection and collaborative efforts for effective cancer management.

The boot camp aimed to create a conducive environment for clinician-innovator-researcher groups to explore and contribute to need-based innovation, aligning innovations with commercial success. The closing session emphasized the power of collaboration between government initiatives and industry in fostering healthcare innovation, showcasing a commitment to advancing cancer care and healthcare innovation.
